Peace of Cake! Fundraiser for Peace Day 2012
Imagine a day of peace, a day where people reflect on peace both as a dream and a reality. Generation Peace Youth Network (GenPeace)—the nationwidest coming together of youth organizations, individuals and peaceniks—is working towards making the peace dream a reality. We believe in connecting, empowering and transforming the young generation as catalysts for peacebuilding. We believe in non-violent and creative solutions to the Bangsamoro armed conflict and the Communist insurgency. We believe that a just and lasting peace has hurdles but we can move from one milestone to another.
“You cannot eat a cake and have it. But you can eat a cake, and help promote softcore and hardcore youth peacebuilding” –Peace of Cake Monster
September 21 is a red-lettered day for Filipinos, the Commemoration of the Declaration of Martial Law, but unknown by most, it is also the ‘Global Day of Peace, Ceasefire and Non-violence’, also known as the International Day of Peace but we simply call it the Peace Day. In fact it is a UN-declared date that commemorates peace and in many cases, gives respite from the armed violence hounding many parts of the world.
In the Philippines, GenPeace has been spearheading the celebrations since 2008. Guided by the principles of community collaboration and fun, the Peace Day celebrations had: produced a peace day documentary and created a nationwide community peace art. Advocates built a Peace Wall Monument at a public park. We had published a collection of poems, photographs and prose. Because of our collective effort, we were successful in gathering support for unilateral declarations of peace day ceasefires (both the President and the MILF leadership gave us their statements of support). We had fun runs and forums, picnic lunches and interfaith prayers. Yearly we gather with youth organizations, the religious, the academe, Moros and Christians, business people, peace advocates, civil society organizations, communities, students, teachers and peoples with disabilities.
We take the Peace Day as an opportunity to educate about peace, call to action the young generation (and the young at heart), and generate support for the peace processes through a day of ceasefire. We believe that peace is possible, it’s a piece of cake but it requires our collective effort at dreaming and turning the dream into a reality. Specifically, the Peace of Cake Fundraising is to:
Raise Funds for Peace Day initiatives
- Gather support and raise awareness for the International Day of Peace
- Support for our local community actions nationwide
This year, we need your help in raising PHP 200,000 for the Peace Day. We have lesser (and lesser) funding as the years go by but we have been more audacious by making national and nationwide simultaneous celebrations. We want to partner with you by offering you a Peace of Cake, our fundraising drive for the Peace Day. 100% of the proceeds will go to the:
- National Peace Day Celebration in Quezon City (with government and other sectors)
- Peace Day Concert with Manila Universities
- Simultaneous Regional Celebrations in CARAGA, Iloilo, Cebu, Samar-Leyte, ARMM and Davao, etc.
- Peace Day Ceasefire Campaign (for the government and all armed groups to silence the guns)
- Campaign materials for Peace Day, Mobilization Fund, Food and Logistical needs
- GenPeace peace education and peace advocacy initiatives for the youth
